Chick-fil-a sent me to the ER

The night started out so right. Yet by the end of it, I was at an Urgent Care getting an X-ray. Let’s start out at the beginning, shall we?

It’s July. It’s hot, muggy, and in Shawnee, there really isn’t much to do in the middle of Summer. Let’s add to this; the fact that a pandemic is happening so there really isn’t much happening. My sister decided to come down for the day, and my roommate was out all day with some old friends of hers. I love my sister. She is my best friend and I was so excited to be able to spend the entire day with her! We went thrifting for a little bit, and then came home right around dinner time.

“Are you hungry?” To me, this sounded like a ridiculous question, because it was almost dinner time.

“Heck yes, I am! What do you want to eat?” I asked because I did not want to spend an hour cooking, in hindsight I should’ve sucked it up and cooked dinner. We decided on Chick-fil-a and swiftly hopped in the car. As we jammed to The 1975, King Princess and more, I didn’t think the night could get any better… I was right.

We eventually ended up back at the house, with Chick-fil-a in hand, and decided to watch the new Emma Chamberlain episode on Youtube while we ate. I sat my drink on the floor because we did not have a table around us, and this was my first mistake. About half-way through the episode, I stood up and inadvertently knocked over my drink.

“Shoot!” I exclaimed. A hole pocked right through the bottom of the cup. As the sweet liquid began rushing out of the cup, I hurriedly scoop up the cup and ran to the sink. As my feet moved from carpet to tile, my foot slipped. I slid right across the floor into the cabinet. My foot hit right beneath the cabinet doors and as I fell my foot got caught beneath the border. I fell… hard. I tried to laugh it off, but as my foot turned from a bright pink to a deep purple I knew I was not able to laugh this off.

My sister jolted up and helped me to the car giving me a bag of frozen corn to ice my foot. As I am crying in the backseat my sister is calming me down and playing some of our favorite music. We eventually make it to the Urgent care where the nurses gave me an X-ray.

“So, what happened?” The nurse asked less than interested.

“I slipped.” I say quietly trying to hold back tears.

“Did anyone see you?” Smirked the nurse as she took my blood pressure.

“Just my sister.” It became easier and easier to hold back tears.

“Ah, I would have hated my sister to see that happen.” Said the nurse in a condescending tone.

“I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to be there.” I said trying not to cry, but it was true. My sister was a pillar of composure and compassion during the whole fiasco. She helped me get to the car, held a rag on my head when I got sick and was a voice of reason. My sister was the only person I wanted there that day and when I remember that day I always think of her. We are growing up and soon she will move away to do mission work. I know that is the circle of life, but I always feel a pain in my soul thinking about her being farther than thirty minutes away from me.

I still have a scar from the bone contusion I suffered that day, but whenever I see it I don’t think of the pain. I think about my sister. As we grow up, I continue to remind myself to cherish the time I have with her, because it will not last forever.
