In the Fall of 2020, Oklahoma Baptist University’s (OBU) Student Government Association (SGA) hosted TWIRP (The Woman Is Required to Pay) week. The week was full of events hosted by SGA, and some events were hosted by other OBU clubs. This semester, TWIRP is being given a run for its money. SGA is hosting its first-ever Shoot your Shot week. Shoot your Shot week is another date week that is similar but not the same as TWIRP week. Shoot your Shot week started off like TWIRP week last semester with a night at Qdoba. The proceeds from the event were split between Qdoba, The Black Student Association (BSA) and Student Athletics Advisory Committee (SACC). For the event, students were encouraged to have dinner at Qdoba and then come back to campus to an event hosted outside of Shoot your Shot week hosted by the BSA.

“Last night at Qdoba was so fun. There were a ton of people there, it was cool to see people come out and then support the BSA and... the Latin Student Association,” said Freshman Vice President Hannah DeMoss. DeMoss also participated in last semester’s TWIRP week going on to say, “[Last Semester] I asked somebody to [an] event every single night, but it was a different person. It was fun to see all [my] friends. I also had to be there anyway, or I wanted to be there but for SGA,” said DeMoss. The biggest difference between Shoot your Shot week and TWIRP week is the dance at the end of the week. The dance is a Sadie Hawkins style meaning, girls ask guys, which can seem counterintuitive to some students, but it fits the description of the week just right according to the Director of Events Joseph Ross.

“There’s a lot of people who believe and think that Shoot your Shot week is a partner to TWIRP week, but it’s actually not because Shoot your Shot week is normalizing that girls can ask guys and guys can ask girls. We can get rid of TWIRP week, and more progress into something, better, I believe, but with that being said: Sadies. The reason why we did [a] Sadie Hawkins is first Spring, at least, it was going to be a Sadie Hawkins dance. Anyways, because we’ve done that in the past in the springtime, [we are] still holding true to that tradition, and then in the fall [we]... hopefully whoever takes over for me, will probably be girls ask guys. But I don't know how well that will do, because guys have a phobia of asking and talking to women,” said Ross.

Shoot your Shot week is off to a busy start with Qdoba, and the week will only get busier with events like Flashlight Tag hosted by the Association of Family Service Practitioners (AFSP), Open Mic night hosted by University Concert Series (UCS), "Barbecuties" hosted by Lambda Chi Lambda and a garden party themed dance at OBU’s Green campus. Only time will tell if this style of date week will be a recurring event week at OBU, but for now, it is off to a full start.
